Eyelid Surgery in Johannesburg | Dr Deon Weyers
Upper lids, lower lids or both: blepharoplasty is tailored to which part of the eye area is ageing. Dr Deon Weyers performs it at Life Fourways Hospital in northern Johannesburg.
Eyelid surgery addresses loose upper-lid skin, lower-lid bags and puffiness. It can be done on its own or alongside other facial procedures, and the scars sit in natural creases.
The practice is based at Life Fourways Hospital, convenient for patients across Johannesburg and Sandton. Your consultation, surgery and follow-up are all with Dr Deon Weyers personally.

Blepharoplasty Johannesburg: Upper, Lower or Combined
The first decision is not whether to have surgery but which lids to treat. Upper and lower blepharoplasty solve different problems.
Upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin that folds over the crease. Lower blepharoplasty deals mostly with fat that has bulged forward to form bags, and sometimes a hollow below them. Many people need only one; some benefit from both. The core blepharoplasty page explains the procedure in general.

For Johannesburg patients, the short distance to Fourways makes reviews easy. Sutures are removed at an early visit, and further reviews follow as needed. Because most eyelid surgery is a day procedure, you can recover at home from the first evening, with a companion to drive you and stay with you that night.
If the brows have dropped, part of the heaviness may come from above the lid. That is checked at consultation, and a brow lift may be discussed. Eye health is checked too: dry eyes, previous laser eye surgery and contact lens wear all affect planning and how much skin can safely be removed.

How the Two Lids Differ
Upper lid: an incision in the natural crease, removal of a measured amount of skin, and sometimes a little fat at the inner corner. The crease height is planned to suit your eye shape and to match on both sides.
Lower lid: fat is removed or repositioned through an incision just below the lashes or inside the lid. Lower-lid surgery is covered in depth on the lower blepharoplasty page.
Treating only the lid that bothers you can leave the other looking out of balance. The consultation looks at both.
Upper vs Lower vs Combined Blepharoplasty
Upper or Lower Alone
Treats one area: hooding of the upper lid, or bags of the lower lid.
A shorter procedure. Suitable when only one area has changed noticeably.
Combined Upper and Lower
Treats both lids in one operation for a balanced result.
A longer procedure, often in theatre, with one recovery period instead of two.
| Aspect | Single Area | Combined |
|---|---|---|
| Treats | Upper hooding or lower bags | Both |
| Setting | Rooms under sedation or theatre | Usually theatre |
| Recovery | One recovery | One recovery, sometimes slightly longer swelling |
| Published cost | R41,000 to R45,000 (upper or lower) | R45,000 to R60,000 |

Sutures removed at an early visit; final settling over the following weeks.
Is Eyelid Surgery Right for You
Suitable patients are healthy adults with changes in the lids that make them look tired, and who understand what surgery can and cannot change.
- Skin folding onto the lashes – Upper-lid hooding
- Persistent under-eye bags – Not explained by allergy or fluid retention
- Good eye health – Dry eye assessed first
- Clear goals – A rested look rather than a change in eye shape
- Puffiness that does not change through the day – Suggesting fat rather than fluid
Final suitability is confirmed in person.
Questions Worth Asking
A good consultation answers these clearly.
- Which lids do I actually need treated? And why the other may or may not be included.
- Is my brow part of the problem?Lid surgery cannot correct a low brow.
- Will this be in theatre or in the rooms? And what that means for the day.
- What does the quote include?Surgeon, facility and anaesthetic fees.
- What will recovery look like for my job?Desk work, client-facing work and physical work have different timelines.

Blepharoplasty Johannesburg: Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the procedure performed?
At Life Fourways Hospital in Johannesburg, either in theatre or, for suitable upper-lid cases, in the practice rooms under sedation.
Can upper and lower lids be done together?
Yes, when both need treatment. Combining them means one recovery period.
How long is recovery?
Bruising and swelling usually settle within about two weeks. Many people return to desk work within five to seven days. A full recovery takes around six to eight weeks.
When can I exercise?
Strenuous exercise is usually avoided for about two weeks.
Do you see patients from Sandton?
Yes. Fourways is a short drive from Sandton, and patients from across Johannesburg are seen at the same practice. The Sandton eyelid surgery page has more.
What is the blepharoplasty cost in Johannesburg?
The published range is R45,000 to R60,000 for upper and lower eyelid surgery, and R41,000 to R45,000 for upper blepharoplasty alone. A written quote follows your consultation.
Will I need upper and lower surgery, or just one?
It depends on which part of the eye area has changed. Many people need only upper-lid surgery for hooding, or only lower-lid surgery for bags. Both lids are examined so the result stays balanced.
Can blepharoplasty be combined with other facial procedures?
Yes, in suitable patients it can be combined with a brow lift or other facial surgery. Combining procedures lengthens the operation, so it is discussed carefully at consultation.
When will I see the final result?
Most swelling settles within two weeks, and the eyelids continue to refine over six to eight weeks. Scars keep fading for several months.
Is there an age limit?
There is no fixed age. Eyelid surgery is most often requested from the mid-thirties onwards, but suitability depends on your eyelids and general health rather than your age.
