Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty Surgery

Eyelid surgery, also known as Blepharoplasty, is fairly simple and is most often a short procedure. The result from this surgery should be open, friendly eyes.

Is Eyelid Surgery for Me?

This is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can improve the appearance of the eyes to give a more youthful look and can be performed on the upper and lower lids. The ideal blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) candidate normally ranges between 30 – 70 years old and shows signs of eyelid drooping, sagging, prominent wrinkles and lower lid bags. These conditions will cause one to look old, grumpy and tired.

How is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

The surgery can be performed in theatre under general anesthetic, but also in Dr Deon’s rooms under conscious sedation. Depending on the need for correction Dr Weyers will either remove excess skin or fat, or both from the upper and lower eyelids. Dr Weyers will make incisions in the eyelid folds which will hide the scars very effectively in both the upper and lower eyelids.

Healing And Recovery?

Swelling and bruising can last up to 2 weeks post-surgery. A full recovery can be expected in 6 to 8 weeks post-surgery, use of sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and avoiding direct sunlight are critical to optimal results. Your eyelids will be swollen for a day or two, and there will be bruising. Dr Deon Weyers will prescribe oral pain medication to keep you comfortable for the first few days. Recovery is relatively short and most patients return to work within 5 or 7 days of the surgery. Dr Deon Weyers will provide a detailed pre and post-operative care sheet. Some post eyelid surgery care instructions include:

  • No strenuous exercise for 2 weeks
  • No eye make-up for 2 weeks
  • Wait 10 days before inserting contact lenses
