Gynecomastia Surgery (Male Breast Reduction) in South Africa | Dr Deon Weyers

Gynecomastia surgery, also called male breast reduction, flattens and contours the chest by removing excess fat, glandular tissue or both. Dr Deon Weyers sees men from across South Africa at the Fourways practice in Johannesburg.

Enlarged breast tissue in men is common, and it can affect confidence, posture and what you are willing to wear. When it persists, surgery can remove the excess and give the chest a flatter, firmer shape.

The right operation depends on what the enlargement is made of. Fat responds to liposuction; firm glandular tissue usually needs to be cut out. Many men have both, and Dr Deon Weyers plans the approach after examining you.

It’s a year now since my surgery last year on the 9th of July. I am extremely happy with my new look🥰 I did an abdominoplasty, 360 liposuction and hip dips filler. Wade was amazing from the day I contacted them till after care. Natasha and Natalie were all fantastic. They all offered me world class service from start to finish. Everything was well explained to me and they were always available when I needed them. Dr Weyers and his team at theatre were amazing too, I recovered quickly and only spent 3 nights at the hospital. As I type this review, I managed to complete my first comrades marathon(86KM) on the 14th of June with ease, just to emphasise that my surgery went so well and I got exactly what I wanted and recovered well. Keep up the good work guys, greatly appreciated 🙏👌

I had my surgeries carefully curated in 2 phases. The process is a well coordinated and you are assured and kept abreast of all aspects. Dr Weyers and his team are simply the best. Dr is very professional, knowledgeable and passionate about his craft. Pain management is taken care of. Dr Weyers’ work doesn’t end once he concludes the operation, he follows through even during recovery and should he suspect issues he quickly addresses them. It truly is a 5 star experience! Expensive but worth every cent. My confidence is at its peak. I feel as good as I look!!

After losing more than 70kg over the last two years, I knew that removing the excess skin would be the final step in completing my transformation. Choosing Dr Deon for that journey was one of the best decisions I could have made. From the very first consultation, Dr Deon made me feel comfortable, informed, and confident in the process ahead. His professionalism, skill, and attention to detail were evident every step of the way. He took the time to answer my questions, explain everything clearly, and ensure I felt supported throughout the entire journey. I underwent a lower body lift, belt lipectomy, and liposuction, and while recovery has certainly had its challenges, the results have been truly life changing. Dr Deon didn't just perform surgery, he helped me complete a transformation that started with a commitment to changing my life. For the first time in many years, I feel comfortable in my own skin. The confidence and freedom I have gained are difficult to put into words. I am incredibly grateful to Dr Deon and his team for their care, support, and exceptional work. Thank you for helping me close one chapter and begin another with confidence. I would recommend Dr Deon without hesitation to anyone considering body contouring surgery after major weight loss

Male Breast Reduction in South Africa

Men travel to the Fourways practice from across South Africa for gyno surgery. The procedure suits men with enlargement on one side or both sides, in any combination of fat, gland and skin.

Gynecomastia refers to enlarged male breast tissue. Some men have mainly fatty enlargement, sometimes called pseudogynecomastia; others have a firm disc of glandular tissue behind the nipple; and many have a mix. Where there has been significant weight loss, loose skin may also be part of the picture.

    • Fat, gland or both
    • Liposuction and excision
    • One or both sides
    • Hospital setting
    • Single surgeon

Before surgery, Dr Deon Weyers takes a history that covers medications, supplements and general health, because some causes of breast enlargement in men are treated differently or need to be addressed first.

Gynecomastia surgery sits within the practice’s body contouring and cosmetic procedures for men.

Man's chest and torso, the area treated by gynecomastia (male breast reduction) surgery

    What Gynecomastia Surgery Involves

Excess fat is removed with liposuction through small incisions. Firm glandular tissue is removed through a small incision at the edge of the areola, where the scar is less noticeable.

Where loose skin remains, a skin reduction may be added. A drain is often used for a short time, and a compression vest helps control swelling and bruising.

The type of tissue decides the technique. Liposuction alone will not remove firm glandular tissue, and excision alone will not contour fat across the chest.

Liposuction vs Gland Excision for Gynecomastia

    Liposuction

Removes fatty tissue across the chest through small incisions, contouring the outline of the chest wall.

Suited to mainly fatty enlargement with reasonable skin quality. Scars are small.

    Gland Excision

Removes the firm disc of glandular tissue behind the nipple through an incision at the lower edge of the areola.

Suited to glandular gynecomastia. It is frequently combined with liposuction to blend the edges.

    The Procedure

    The Gynecomastia Surgery Process

Every step is with Dr Deon Weyers at the Fourways practice and Life Fourways Hospital.

    1. Consultation and examination

Your history, medications and the feel of the tissue guide whether liposuction, excision or both are needed. Further tests are arranged if a medical cause needs ruling out.

    2. Planning

The incisions, the amount of tissue to remove and whether skin reduction is needed are agreed in advance.

    3. Surgery

Performed in hospital. The type of anaesthesia depends on the procedure and on you, and is discussed beforehand.

    4. Drain and compression vest

A drain is often used briefly to prevent fluid collecting, and a compression vest reduces swelling and bruising.

    5. Recovery and follow-up

Follow-up visits check healing and contour as swelling settles over the following weeks.

Who is a Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery

Men are usually good candidates when the enlargement has persisted and other causes have been considered.

    • Persistent enlargement – Breast tissue that has not settled over time
    • Excess fat, gland or skin – On one side or both sides
    • Stable weight – So the result is not affected by further weight change
    • Medical causes considered – Including medications, supplements and anabolic steroid use, which should be discussed openly
    • Good general health – And willingness to stop nicotine around surgery
    • Clear goals – A flatter, firmer chest contour rather than a specific physique

The approach is confirmed after examination, not from a web page.

    Preparing for Your Consultation

A few details help Dr Deon Weyers plan the right operation.

    • List medications and supplements.Including anything used for training or bodybuilding; some substances contribute to breast tissue growth.
    • Note how long it has been present. And whether it changed with weight gain, weight loss or medication.
    • Think about time off.You will need to avoid strenuous upper-body exercise for a period after surgery.
    • Ask what the scars will look like. They are usually small and placed at the areola edge, but it helps to know in advance.

    What Gynecomastia Surgery Costs

Cost depends on whether liposuction, excision or both are needed and on whether skin is removed. The practice’s published figures for male surgery are on male surgery prices in South Africa.

A written quote is issued after consultation, once the technique is agreed.

Cosmetic gynecomastia surgery is generally self-funded. Where there is a documented medical indication, some medical aids consider cover on motivation.

    Common Myths About Gynecomastia

These misunderstandings often delay men from seeking advice.

It is always just fat. Many men have firm glandular tissue that diet and exercise cannot shift.
Chest exercises will fix it.Training builds the muscle underneath but does not remove glandular tissue.
Liposuction alone always works.Gland needs to be excised; liposuction alone can leave a firm lump behind the nipple.
The scars will be obvious.Incisions are usually small and placed at the edge of the areola.
It only affects overweight men.Gynecomastia also occurs in slim men, often on one side only.

    Risks and Possible Complications

    Recognised Risks of Gynecomastia Surgery

Risks common to surgery: bleeding or haematoma, infection and slow healing of the incisions.

Contour risks: unevenness between the two sides, a slight hollow or residual fullness, and occasionally a later revision.

Nipple and skin risks: altered nipple sensation, changes in nipple shape and, rarely, loss of skin or nipple tissue.

Fluid collection: seroma can form after surgery, which is why a drain and compression vest are often used.

Anaesthesia: the anaesthetist explains anaesthetic risk before the day of surgery.

    Steps That Lower Your Risk

    • Disclose all substances – including supplements and anabolic steroids, so the cause and safety can be assessed.
    • Stop nicotine – before and after surgery.
    • Wear the compression vest – for as long as advised.
    • Ease back into training – and avoid heavy chest work until you are cleared.

Call the practice urgently if one side of the chest swells rapidly or becomes very painful, if you develop a fever or spreading redness, or if a wound starts to leak. The practice provides contact details for concerns outside office hours.

Gynecomastia Surgery South Africa: Frequently Asked Questions

Is gynecomastia surgery the same as male breast reduction?

Yes. Both terms describe surgery to remove excess fat, glandular tissue or skin from the male chest.

How do I know whether I need liposuction or excision?

Dr Deon Weyers examines the tissue at consultation. Soft, spread-out enlargement is often fatty; a firm area behind the nipple is usually glandular. Many men need both.

Can it be done on one side only?

Yes. Gynecomastia can affect one or both sides, and surgery is planned accordingly.

    What is the recovery like?

A drain may be used briefly and a compression vest is worn to control swelling and bruising. Strenuous upper-body exercise is paused until you are cleared.

    Will medical aid cover it?

Cosmetic gynecomastia surgery is generally self-funded. A documented medical indication may be considered for cover on motivation.

    Can I see examples?

The male surgery before and after gallery shows individual cases. Every result is different.

Is this related to female breast reduction?

The aims overlap but the anatomy and technique differ. Female breast reduction is a separate procedure.
