Everything You Need To Know (The DW Skin & Body Series).
What is a BBL? I’ve been getting a lot of questions asking what a BBL is and BBL stands for Brazilian Butt Lift. In this procedure, we do Liposuction to harvest fat and we re-inject that fat into the buttocks to enhance its shape and increase its size or its volume.
With Liposuction, we usually target the area where the unwanted fat is like the flanks or the love handles, the tummy or the abdomen, the inner thighs, sometimes the outer thighs and then also sometimes even the buttocks depending on the certain shape the patient desires.
You get various buttock shapes. You get a round shape, you get an ‘A’ shape – these are the curvaceous more desirable shapes and then you get the undesirable shapes like the square shape or the ‘V’ shape. By harvesting the fat through Liposuction and processing the fat, we can use that fat to go and enhance the shape of the buttocks and increase its size or its volume.
Well, how do we obtain the fat? Liposuction is performed in these areas where the fat is to be harvested from. Firstly the areas are marked and then injected with what we call a tumescent solution and this is usually a combination of normal saline with local anesthetic and adrenaline just to minimize discomfort and bruising to the patient. Next tiny incisions or cuts are made in the natural skin creases and then we use long metal tubes, we call them cannulas connected to a suction device or a syringe back and forth motions are then carried out underneath the skin where the fat is to be removed and the fat is then collected in canisters or containers making it ready for processing to be re-injected into the buttocks.
How is the fat then injected into the buttocks? Well, firstly the fat needs to be processed this means that we need to separate the blood and the fluid and also remove the broken cells and the oil from the fat. The fat can then be used as a filler material to be injected into the buttocks to enhance its shape and increase its size or volume. We can also concentrate growth factors taken from the patient’s own blood to increase the longevity and lifespan or overall long-term result of the enhancement. Stem cells can also be obtained from the patient’s own fat and also be used to enrich the fat graft improving its overall long-lasting result. The fat is then used and replaced by using syringes in the same way that fat was harvested from the liposuction areas into the buttocks increasing its size and also enhancing its overall shape.
What can you expect from a procedure like this? Well, in most cases this procedure can be done as a day case in the rooms, under local anesthetic and sedation. The procedure will last about an hour and a half to four hours depending on the amount of liposuction to be done and whether the procedure was combined with other surgeries at the same time. In some cases it might be advised to be done under a general anesthetic with one night stay in hospital. Absorbent pads are placed over the incision sites just to absorb any of the fluid that otherwise would leak out or remain underneath the skin and in some cases drains are placed and these drains are usually then removed three to five days afterwards at the surgery.
What can you expect from the downtime and the recovery from this procedure? Well, there’s a lot of bruising and swelling associated with this procedure. Swelling lasts about two weeks before it gradually subsides and most of the swelling will be resolved at six weeks after the surgery. It’s therefore important to wear a compressive garment which is a medical type of lycra bodysuit for the six weeks following the procedure this gives support to the areas where the liposuction was done and also some support to the areas where the fat was grafted or placed into the buttocks. Bruising is also a common feature with this surgery and lasts about 7 to 10 days. Arnica supplements can be taken to minimize the bruising as quick as possible.
Well, I hope you found this information video on BBL’s interesting. Keep an eye open for any future information videos on cosmetic surgeries and procedures offered at the practice. I look forward to you checking in next time.
