Losing weight is a great achievement and a step towards a healthier you. Skin removal surgery includes a range of body contouring procedures performed after major weight loss to address excess skin folds on the arms, legs, torso and/or buttocks, helping patients achieve a more natural, aesthetically pleasing shape. This is achieved through surgically removing the excess skin and tightening the muscles.
Is Excess Skin Removal for Me?
Patients would choose this procedure if they are bothered by sagging skin, from major weight loss. This procedure improves the shape and tone of the underlying tissue.
How is an Excess Skin Removal Procedure Performed?
This procedure is usually performed under a general anesthetic and occasionally an epidural may be used and can be done in the comfort of Dr Deon’s rooms depending on the specifics and complexity of the procedure. Incisions will be made within natural skin folds and in areas where the scars will be hidden by clothes, however, some scars may be visible. The type of skin removal surgery will depend on the patient.
Healing and Recovery
Most patients will remain in the hospital for 2 to 3 nights after the procedure. Healing time varies depending on the extent of the procedure and the surgeon’s preferred techniques. The incision areas will be covered with gauze to assist healing, and often a compression garment is advised. Small tubes may be placed at the incision sites to drain any excess blood or fluid.
