Otoplasty Pretoria
Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) By Dr Deon Weyers In Pretoria
Otoplasty, also known as cosmetic ear surgery, is a procedure in which the size, shape or position of an ear, or ears, is changed. Otoplasty corrects protruding ears and defects in the ear either from birth defects or trauma.
Is Otoplasty Surgery for me?
Patients might choose to have otoplasty if they are bothered by:
- Protruding ears
- Large ears
- Abnormally shaped
- Deformed ears
Ear surgery can be considered from age 6 as the ears would have reached their full size.
How is Otoplasty Performed?
There are three types of otoplasty: Ear Augmentation, Ear Pinning and Ear Reduction. This procedure is typically an outpatient procedure, takes between 1 – 3 hours, and can be done in the comfort of Dr Deon’s rooms depending on the specifics and complexity of the procedure. Adults and older children may receive local anesthesia, while in other cases general anesthesia may be used. The location and type of incisions will depend on the type of otoplasty you’re having. The procedure typically involves making an incision, manipulating the tissue of the ear and then closing the incision with stitches.
Healing and Recovery
Following the procedure, dressing would be placed over your ears to allow healing. This dressing should be kept clean and dry. The ears will be swollen, bruised and numbing may occur. Bruising will disappear 7 to 10 days post-surgery and total healing will take at least 6 weeks.
