Liposuction in South Africa | Dr Deon Weyers
Liposuction removes stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise. This page is an overview of the areas and techniques offered at the Fourways practice, with links to the city pages for patients across South Africa.
Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight-loss operation. It reshapes specific areas by removing fat through small incisions, and it suits people who are close to a stable, healthy weight.
Dr Deon Weyers performs liposuction, including high-definition VASER liposuction, at Life Fourways Hospital in Johannesburg and sees patients from across South Africa. Every consultation, operation and follow-up is with him personally.

Liposuction South Africa: The Areas That Can Be Treated
Most people asking about liposuction have one or two areas in mind. The first step is understanding which areas can be treated, and which concerns are better addressed by another procedure.
Areas commonly treated include the chin and neck, the cheeks and jowls, the upper arms, the chest, the upper and lower back (including the “buffalo hump” at the base of the neck), the abdomen and waistline, the hips, the buttocks, the inner and outer thighs, the knees, the calves and the ankles. Smaller areas can be treated on their own; several areas can be combined into one plan.
- Chin and neck
- Arms and back
- Abdomen and waist
- Hips and thighs
- VASER and 4D
- Single surgeon
Many patients choose VASER liposuction, which uses ultrasound energy to loosen fat before it is removed. Dr Deon Weyers is a Key Opinion Leader for VASER Lipo and Renuvion, and trained in VASER Lipo in Colombia, one of a small number of South African surgeons to hold this training.
Fat removed during liposuction does not have to be discarded. In selected plans it is processed and moved to another area, as in fat transfer or a Brazilian butt lift. Whether that suits you is part of the consultation.

Where to Read More for Your City
Patients in and around Johannesburg can read the Johannesburg liposuction page, which compares VASER with traditional liposuction, and the Sandton liposuction page.
Patients travelling to Fourways can read the Pretoria VASER page and the Cape Town VASER page, which covers planning a trip and staged treatment. All surgery takes place at the single Fourways practice.
Liposuction changes shape, not weight. A stable weight and good skin quality over the treated area matter more than the amount of fat removed.
Liposuction vs Other Body Contouring Procedures
Liposuction
Removes fat through small incisions. Skin with good elasticity usually contracts over the new contour, so no skin is cut away.
Suited to localised fat deposits in people near a stable weight, with reasonable skin tone over the treated area.
Excision Procedures
Procedures such as a tummy tuck or excess skin removal cut away loose skin and, for the abdomen, can repair separated muscles.
Suited to loose or hanging skin after pregnancy or major weight loss, where liposuction alone would leave skin that cannot contract.
| Aspect | Liposuction | Tummy tuck or skin removal |
|---|---|---|
| Main problem treated | Localised fat deposits | Loose skin, with or without muscle separation |
| Scars | Small puncture-type incisions | Longer scars placed where clothing usually covers them |
| Skin quality needed | Reasonable elasticity | Works when skin elasticity is poor |
| Muscle repair | Not possible | Possible with a tummy tuck |
| Often combined | With fat transfer or skin tightening | With liposuction of the flanks or thighs |
How Liposuction Is Planned and Performed
Liposuction is performed in a hospital theatre. The plan is agreed at consultation so that you know which areas are treated and why.
Consultation
An examination of each area of concern, your skin quality and your medical history, followed by a written plan and quote.
Markings
On the day of surgery the areas are marked while you stand, so the contours are planned in their natural position.
Fat loosening
A fluid is infiltrated into the area and, for VASER, ultrasound energy is used to loosen the fat before it is removed.
Contouring
Fat is removed through small cannulas, working in layers to produce a smooth, even contour.
Recovery and follow-up
A compression garment is fitted, and you are reviewed at the practice over the following weeks.
Who Liposuction Suits
Liposuction is considered for adults in good general health who have specific fat deposits that persist despite a healthy lifestyle.
- Close to your goal weight – Liposuction is most suitable when you are no more than about 10 to 15 kg above your goal weight.
- Localised deposits – Fat that sits in particular areas rather than evenly across the body.
- Reasonable skin tone – Skin that is likely to contract over the new contour.
- Stable weight – A weight you expect to maintain after surgery.
- Realistic goals – An understanding that liposuction refines shape and is not a substitute for weight loss.
- Good general health – Controlled medical conditions and willingness to stop smoking before and after surgery.
Suitability is decided in person. A photo review can help to start the conversation before you travel to Fourways.
Questions Worth Asking at Your Consultation
A good liposuction plan is specific. These questions help you understand exactly what is proposed.
- Which areas will be treated, and in what order of priority. If you have several areas in mind, ask which matter most and which could wait.
- Is VASER recommended for my areas.Ask why a particular technique has been chosen for your tissue and goals.
- Would skin removal serve me better. If skin is loose, ask whether liposuction alone will give the shape you want.
- What does recovery look like for my plan.More areas mean more swelling and a longer period in a compression garment.
What Liposuction Costs in South Africa
The practice publishes estimates per area on its liposuction prices page: smaller single areas such as the chin or face start from around R30,000, abdominal liposuction from around R50,000, and full-body liposuction from around R120,000.
For 360 liposuction with Renuvion, the published range is R100,000 to R120,000. Your own quote depends on the number of areas, the techniques used and theatre time, and is confirmed in writing after consultation.
Cosmetic liposuction is generally not covered by South African medical aids. Third-party patient financing is available; the practice can explain the options.
Common Misunderstandings About Liposuction
A few misconceptions come up repeatedly. Clearing them early leads to better decisions.
Risks and Possible Complications
Recognised Risks of Liposuction
General surgical risks include bleeding, infection, delayed healing of the small incisions and the possibility of revision.
Contour-related risks include uneven or dimpled areas, fluid collections (seroma), lasting swelling and changes in skin sensation over the treated area.
With energy-assisted techniques there is a risk of heat injury to the skin. Rare but serious risks include blood clots and fat entering the bloodstream; anaesthetic risk is discussed with the anaesthetist before surgery.
Ways to Lower Your Risk
- Be honest about your health – including medication, supplements and any history of clots.
- Avoid nicotine – for the period advised before and after surgery.
- Keep moving after surgery – with short walks, and wear your garment as instructed.
- Keep your review appointments – and contact the practice early if something changes.
Contact the practice urgently, or seek emergency care, if you develop breathlessness, chest pain, a painful or swollen calf, rapidly increasing pain or swelling, fever, spreading redness or discharge from an incision.
Medical disclaimer. This page is general information and does not replace a face-to-face consultation. Surgical decisions require an in-person assessment, a full consent discussion and the individual medical advice of your surgeon and anaesthetist.
Liposuction South Africa: Frequently Asked Questions
Where is liposuction performed?
At Life Fourways Hospital in Johannesburg, the practice’s single location. Patients from other cities attend there for each step of their care.
Which areas can be treated with liposuction?
Common areas include the chin, neck, cheeks, arms, chest, back, abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, calves and ankles. Your plan depends on your examination.
What is the difference between VASER and 4D liposuction?
VASER is the ultrasound technology used to loosen fat. “4D” or high-definition liposuction describes the sculpting approach that uses it to define natural contours. Whether it suits you is decided at consultation.
How long is recovery?
Treated areas are usually bruised and tender for the first few weeks. Many people return to normal routines after about two weeks, avoid vigorous exercise for about six weeks, and see swelling settle over several months.
Can I combine liposuction with other procedures?
Yes, in selected cases, for example with a tummy tuck or fat transfer. Combined surgery takes longer, so it is planned with safety first.
How much does liposuction cost in South Africa?
Published estimates start from around R30,000 for a small single area, with full-body liposuction from around R120,000. A written quote follows consultation.
Will medical aid pay for liposuction?
Cosmetic liposuction is generally not covered. The practice can advise if there is a medical indication for your procedure.
Can I start with an online consultation?
Yes. The online photo review lets you share your concerns before an in-person consultation at Fourways.
